Scarus ghobban
Juveniles and females display a golden-yellow to orange base coloration with vivid blue vertical bars. Upon transitioning to the terminal male phase, the body acquires turquoise blue and green tones with pink-edged scale margins.
The teeth are fused into a robust, parrot-like beak adapted for scraping algae and encrusting organisms from rocky substrates and coral surfaces.
This species possesses the biological capacity for sequential hermaphroditism. Should the dominant male disappear, the largest female undergoes a complete physiological sex change.
To avoid predation during sleep, the species secretes a dense mucous cocoon that encases the fish entirely, masking its chemical signature to prevent olfactory detection by nocturnal predators.
