Microspathodon dorsalis
Remarkable for its imposing physical presence and highly territorial temperament, this species is an unmistakable inhabitant of exposed rocky reefs and surge zones.
Exceptionally large for a damselfish, it reaches lengths of 25 to 30 cm. Adults display a uniform coloration ranging from medium gray to deep blue, approaching black.
It feeds by scraping layers of filamentous algae from sun-exposed volcanic rock surfaces. Courtship involves rapid, stereotyped swimming displays directed at females.
