Abudefduf saxatilis
One of the most abundant and easily observed species while snorkeling. It is immediately recognizable by its five vertical black to dark gray bars running down the flanks of its laterally compressed body.
The body displays a vivid yellow-green base coloration, transitioning to a bright metallic silver-white on the flanks and ventral surface.
The species characteristically forms large, dense schools that patrol the water column in close proximity to rocky reef surfaces.
During the reproductive period, the male meticulously clears a section of flat rock to prepare a nest site. The male undergoes a remarkable nuptial color change — shifting to a deep blue or brilliant metallic purple — and assumes an intensely aggressive territorial role after the female deposits her eggs.
