Grapsus grapsus
A decapod crustacean remarkable not only for its agility but for its ecological importance in the intertidal ecosystem.
The species undergoes a dramatic chromatic transformation throughout its life. Juveniles are black to dark green — near-perfect camouflage against volcanic lava. Upon reaching sexual maturity, they develop their characteristic intense red to orange coloration, with yellow spots and a bluish ventral surface.
