Ocypode gaudichaudii
The body is cream to sand-colored, nearly translucent — a cryptic coloration that provides near-perfect camouflage against the beach substrate, lending the species its common name. The eyes are large, stalked, and golden-colored, providing nearly 360-degree vision.
Among the fastest animals on the coastline, it moves laterally across the sand at remarkable speed, capable of changing direction instantaneously. During daylight hours it remains concealed in burrows excavated in dry sand above the tide line.
The species plays an important ecological role as a decomposer and nutrient recycler in beach ecosystems. Although not formally assessed by the IUCN, it is widely recognized as vulnerable to human presence, light pollution, and coastal habitat loss.
