Zalophus wollebaeki
One of the most emblematic species of the islands. Expert divers, they are capable of remaining submerged for several minutes while hunting fish, performing dives to varying depths depending on environmental conditions.
The social system is based on polygyny — one dominant male with multiple females. Dominant males defend a territory on the beach where the females are gathered, frequently losing weight dramatically until displaced by a stronger challenger.
Females have a gestation period of approximately 11 months. Pups can be nursed for up to nearly four years, ensuring their survival in an environment where food availability can decrease suddenly.
