Cryptocarpus pyriformis
A native species that functions as a biological buffer zone between the beach and the arid inland zone, forming dense green thickets.
Its leaves are small, oval, and bright green. They are succulent — storing large quantities of water — to dilute the concentration of salt absorbed from the soil and the marine air.
Scientifically considered a ‘habitat engineer’ due to its capacity to modify the physical conditions of its environment. Its dense thickets are a favored resting place for sea lions and marine iguanas.
