History and Community
The official name of San Cristóbal Island was formalized in 1892; however, it was previously known as Chatham, a name assigned in the 18th century. Among the earliest settlement processes, the establishment of Hacienda El Progreso in 1866 by Manuel J. Cobos stands out — a sugar-producing enterprise that became the first significant permanent settlement on the island. Today, the community lives from tourism, fishing, and conservation.
