Its most distinctive feature is the intensely yellow caudal fin, which contrasts strikingly against the dark brown coloration of the body.
Juveniles exhibit brilliant neon-blue coloration with small electric-blue ocelli on the dorsum and lack the characteristic yellow caudal fin of adults.
The species is primarily herbivorous, cultivating patches of filamentous algae on rocky substrates within a strictly defended territory. Intruders are repelled through aggressive biting behavior directed at any encroaching individual, regardless of size.
During courtship, the male performs a stereotyped display known as a ‘signal jump’: he ascends rapidly toward the surface and then dives steeply back toward the nest site.
