The species possesses a short, conical, slightly upturned bill of exceptional strength, anatomically designed to function as a mechanical lever.
Using its bill and head, it systematically flips stones, shells, dried algae, and detritus. Scientific observation has documented individuals moving objects weighing nearly as much as themselves to access invertebrates concealed beneath.
Its diet includes small crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and occasionally the remains of other seabirds’ eggs or carrion.
